FLORENCE- A legacy of giving came full circle in Florence Wednesday, as high school students came together to honor the legacy of a former assistant principal while making one child’s dreams come true.

Members of West Florence High School’s student government began a fundraising campaign on Dec. 1, to collect money to grant the wish of five-year-old Grace Dixon.

Representatives from the Make-A-Wish Foundation asked officials at the school if they would like to help grant the wish of Dixon, who suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

The condition causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.

Grace’s mother, Robin, said she was very surprised when she found out that her child’s wish would be granted through the generosity of other young people.

“It was very heartwarming and amazing,” Robin Dixon said.

MILEY Cyrus caught up with one of her number one fans before her rather raunchy show at Adelaide Entertainment Centre this week.

Sixteen-year-old Tina May, who suffers from spinal muscular atrophy, has been a patient in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital for 12 months, where her room is plastered with Miley posters and even a fabulous Miley bedspread.

But, needless to say, nothing was going to keep Tina away from Wednesday night’s show.

In the lead-up to what she described as “the single most exciting thing in my life”, Tina checked herself in for a Miley makeover, having her hair and make-up done by City Chic and Iris Boutique.

SEMMES, Alabama — Thanks to Magic Moments, an organization established in 1984 in Alabama to grant non-medical wishes to children 4-18 living in Alabama with life-threatening or life-altering medical conditions, there is a new saltwater swimming pool in Semmes at the house of Chris Martin.

Martin’s 8-year-old daughter, Maddy, was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy when she was only 7 months old. The disease has left Maddy with muscles too weak to lift her arms or move her legs.

“She can’t move at all out of the water except to wiggle her fingers, but in the water, she can move more. She giggles and laughs,” said Martin.

He discovered Maddy’s ability to move in water when they went on family vacations and stayed in a place with a swimming pool.

Whitfield honored for service

For the last eight years, Westerville resident Nila Whitfield has helped make the wishes of more than 40 children come true.

As a result, the Make-A-Wish volunteer and fundraiser has been named an “outstanding volunteer” by the foundation’s Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana Region.

Whitfield said she first volunteered for Make-A-Wish after a friend’s child had a wish granted. That friend began volunteering and encouraged Whitfield to do the same.

“When I got ready to retire from Ohio State, she said, ‘Nila, this would be perfect for you,'” Whitfield said.

Whitfield said the families she meets are what make volunteering for Make-A-Wish great.

Maddy Martin has wanted a pool for years. She has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and is confined to a wheelchair. Her condition has worsened to the point she can’t move the majority of the muscles in her body. When asked about whether she is excited about her new pool, she uses her soft voice and raises her eyebrows. “yes, I am,” she says.

The Magic moments organization, which grants wishes to Alabama children, is granting Maddy’s wish. With the help of her father Chris, Maddy will be able to enjoy the water, along with her two little brothers. Chris Martin says the pool will be therapeutic as well. “The pool is the only way she can move, so when she sees herself moving, she gets all excited giggling and stuff. She can’t move anything accept in the water.”
